In an exquisite digipack comes the new album of Von Thronstahl. This controversial band will amplify the opinions about them with this pretty political release. A “musical terrorists network” was founded (with a funny “wanted” leaflet in the middle of the booklet) and the quotes and lyrics that come with each track are clear enough (but can of course still be either fuel or water depending on your own ideas). 19 Tracks seemingly going over most of Von Thronstahl’s musical history with orchestral tracks, marchdrums (fierce of subtle), rocksongs, neofolk and a lot of martial bombast, but also the more sound-collage oriented tracks. Especially the first part of the album is very good with a variety of good tracks and songs with of course a load of samples. The overall length is 70 minutes. For people worrying about the musical direction of the band: the way the songs are created may remind of “Bellum, Sacrum Bellum?!”, but sound does not really. On the other hand, neither is the sound as dark as on the early releases (which I guess will not be topped anymore). “Germanium Metallicum” is a real Von Thronstahl album and like all of the others, it is pretty good too.

Acerca de Kutna Hora

Tras haber disuelto su banda anterior, "Angustia", Fernando Javier Diéguez (voz y percusión) decide formar una nueva. Así "Kutna Hora" tuvo en su primera formación a Guillermo Pájaro (guitarras) y Gabriel C. (teclados). Para su primera presentación en vivo en Buenos Aires, Martín Silva toma el lugar de Guillermo. Luego se sumó Alejandro Pájaro (guitarras, percusión) y esta formación es la que graba el álbum debut "Will or Nothing", editado en Argentina y en Europa por el sello alemán Black Rain. Para sus presentaciones en vivo Kutna Hora contó en ese momento con la colaboración de varios músicos invitados, entre ellos, Agustín Mendoza Paz e Ignacio (violín), Giselle (flauta traversa), Marcos Veroni y Pablo (gaita).

En el año 2003 son invitados por "Therion" como banda soporte en el concierto que la banda sueca realizó en el teatro Gran Rivadavia (Argentina).

Luego de un período de receso por problemas internos el grupo se reúne, ya sin Martín, y se incorpora Juan Andrés Celasco de la banda "Lamia" en teclados. En agosto de 2004 hacen su primer gira por Europa (Alemania-Holanda) en el festival "Summer Darkness" invitados por el sello "Black Rain".

En marzo del 2005 tocan junto a Ataraxia en el Teatro Inmaculada Concepción de Buenos Aires. En agosto de ese mismo año, la banda edita su segundo álbum, "Obsession Faith Perseverance", en Argentina y Alemania. Y este llegó al puesto número dos en el ranking de música alternativa en Italia. En diciembre de 2005 se edita un vinilo 7" llamado "Santa Cruz" a través del sello Black Sun de Brasil.

A principios del 2006 la banda decide expulsar a Carbone por sus manejos turbios. Ese mismo año regresa Guillermo Pájaro y comienzan a trabajar en el material de su próximo álbum.

Arreglos y ornamentaciones precisas decoran esta más que correcta obra del cuarteto argentino, con ediciones en Sudamérica y Europa

"Will Or Nothing" es un trabajo de Kutna Hora editado en Ars Musica Diffundere & Twilight Records (Ref: AMD 007,TW 1.02) en Junio de 2003.
Interpretado por Fernando Diéquez como vocalista & Gabriel Carbone como vocalista y percusionista & Alejandro Pájaro como guitarrista & Juan A. Celasto como teclista desde Argentina y se centra en el estilo Dark Folk y tiene una duración de 60,00 minutos.

Argentina, Chile, Colombia y, por supuesto, México, llevan ya tiempo aportando buenos grupos de música oscura a la escena mundial, lo cual no debería de ser extraño si nos atenemos a la situación que viven esos países, donde la desesperación y la indignación deberían de estar mucho más presentes en la expresión artística de sus sociedades.

No obstante, suele ser más común afiliarse al ridículo contoneo de caderas o a la mezcla indiscriminada de estilos, lo que provoca por parte del público europeo (y no digamos del español) un desconocimiento injusto de lo que allí se cuece tanto cultural como socialmente.Kutna Hora - "Will Or Nothing"

Si a todo esto sumamos el hecho indiscutible de que el dark folk, o el neofolk son, por defecto, de origen anglo-nórdico, el hecho de que exista una notabilísima banda de este género en Argentina no deja de asombrar y de darle a sus creaciones un resplandor especial, una valoración un tanto parcial pero que se tienen, sus músicos, que haber ganado a pulso.

Pues eso es lo que tiene Kutna Hora (no entraremos una vez más a explicar el origen del nombre, para eso tienen nuestros lectores Google), son argentinos, practican un dark folk con toques martial muy próximo a sus ídolos, éstos son los mismos que todos los seguidores de estas músicas marginales tenemos (no hay ni que nombrarlos, sabemos quiénes son), y, por lo tanto, tienen en el mercado un disco de calidad que aún más se hace de querer por todo lo señalado anteriormente.

Pero vayamos por partes: Will Or Nothing es editado por el subsello de Black Rain Ars Musica Diffundere bajo licencia del sello argentino Twilight Records. Los compositores son Gabriel Carbone y Fernando Diéguez, que han contado con las colaboraciones de un buen número de músicos entre los que se encuentra algún miembro de Lamia, aportando todos ellos al sonido los arreglos y ornamentaciones estrictamente necesarios.

Han intentado hacer un álbum variado, que no se ancle en sus devociones, para que el trascurso del mismo no resulte monótono, y para ello han accedido al repertorio de temas oscuros, de rítmica martial, como en el caso de la misma introducción o de Wildes Heer; también al recurso de la versión, en el caso de la maravillosa Why We Cried, original de In My Rosary, canción que si no han mejorado es, simplemente, porque el original era insuperable; también han hecho una versión del tema tradicional irlandés Michael, llevado a cabo aquí como un cierto mecanismo indiscriminado...; se han relamido con sus homenajes a Nietzsche (en Oratorium, un corte singular, no especialmente llamativo, pero de agradecer) y a Rimbaud (A Song From The Highest Tower, tal vez algo larga, aunque con un comienzo a capella considerablemente hermoso)...

En fin, que se han planteado los problemas básicos del género y los han procurado remendar, a sabiendas de que las bases no les permitirían una mayor originalidad, y que la personalidad sólo se obtiene a base de intentar probar distintos caminos, aunque sólo sea para volver después al hogar de uno mismo, el sitio en el que se sientan más cómodos. Comodidad sólo alcanzada en los territorios afines, en sonidos de oscuridad bombástica (como es el caso de Carbone), o en canciones acústicas de factura conocida, velo de romanticismo o melancolía que oculta las consabidas inexperiencias pero que agrada por su misma contenida belleza, tal vez demasiado contenida, poco coladero para la locura, el desenfreno, la tara inmortal de la imperfección de lo surreal, muesca maldita de sus propios héroes, gente que no teme a nada y que se desborda.

Aquí no hay desbordamiento, hay sentimiento, pero la sobriedad se impone en las tonalidades, las emociones se mantienen en un justo término, aunque lo injusto también debería de ser necesario, porque el paroxismo golpea siempre las sienes del oyente y deja más huella que lo que debe de hacerse de una manera determinada. El problema es ése: a veces no hay que hacer lo que se debe. Así, pese a que el resultado final guste, a Kutna Hora se les siente caminantes con la seguridad de quien ya tiene un techo bajo el que cobijarse, exentos entonces del riesgo de dormir a la intemperie, aforísticos pero con las trabas que eso mismo supone.

Con todo lo dicho anteriormente, queda claro que este álbum de debut es un disco notable, que deja un buen sabor de boca y que resulta agradable en la escucha. No hay más que oír Hell Is A Place On Earth o Friend para reconocerse afín a ciertas impresiones y sumergirse así en pensamientos compartidos por tantos espíritus inquietos o resignados... Tal vez se alargue un poco, carezca de riesgo... No hacen nada que no se haya hecho antes, pero, ¿quién lo hace hoy en día?

Ese privilegio sólo queda para los genios.

About Kutna Hora:

The band is formed in March 2001 as a proyect of dark folk marcial music. Its foundation members are: Gabriel Carbone, voice, percussion and keyboards, and Fernando Dieguez, voice and percussion. Shortly afterwards Martin Silva joined them in acoustic guitar and so the first stable formation of the band was already established. Both started to bring songs to be performed that were composed by themselves, and the song called Oratorium -the first demo recorded in a Studio- became rapidly the diffusion sound track of the band.. The people of Los Cantos de Maldoror asked them for a song to be part of the tribute to the earl of Lautreamont, Onore Ducase, which would be produced in December 2001. That song would be Oratorium, which despite the fact that it has no relation with the concept of the earl of Lautreamont, the people of Maldoror liked it reason why they decided to include it anyway. This tribute CD will shortly be produced in Spain and among other bands that will be included there will be: Ataraxia, Allersellen, Hekate, etc.

The first Kutna Hora concert took place on Saturday, August 11th. 2001 with an audience of over 280 people.As months went by , the band was improving the sound quality and incorporating new musicians. Alejandro Pajaro joined the band as a stable percussionist, bass and vocals. Thus the actual band formation was established. As live guests musicians they have Agust strings, and Pablo, bagpipe.With these members the group was the support band of Therion during their Buenos Aires visit on Saturday October 27th. 2001 at the Gran Rivadavia Theatre. They opened the show at 21 hours performing in front of over 800 people.Finally last August appeared the brand new Kutna Hora album entitled "Will or Nothing" , produced by Twilight Records.The disc has 13 songs which go from dark folk sounds to some marcial touches and elements.The fact that it has been recorded and played in a completely acoustic way, has turned it into a different folk disc, more intimate and capable to generate moments of sweet grief.

Albúm Review:

“Different cultures, different lives / the same evoking story of the past / just another name, just another land”. That this is true proves Kutna Hora, a band that comes from Argentina, but whose music sounds very universal. The piece of lyric comes from ‘Hell is a place on earth’, one of their best songs. This album was earlier released in their home country, but now presented to a larger public by the German Ars Musica Diffundere. Kutna Hora, named after the famous gothic church in Bohemia (notorious for its ’skull art’, which you see reflected on the cover of the album), was formed in 2001 and uses acoustic guitars, percussion, keyboards and male vocals. On this album some guest musicians add strings and flute.

Situated somewhere between neofolk and darkwave, Kutna Hora makes melancholic music with pleasant melodies and stripped to its essentials. A clear reference is In My Rosary, which I would also have noted if the band hadn’t included a moody cover of ‘Why we cried’, with a lovely violin. ‘Love’ is a nice minimal romantic song, with warm vocals by Fernado Dieguez, a fine singer. The songs are performed tasteful, without unnessecary drama. I also have to think of the folky work of Engelsstaub at times. Another well-known song on the album is ‘Michael’, the traditional folksong previously recorded by Fire & Ice amongst others, here called ‘Crazy man Michael’. Texts by European writers are used on ‘Oratorium’ (Nietschze) and ‘A song from the highest tower’ (Rimbaud). ‘This is disease’ is a great desperate track, in which the vocals and instruments seem to fight each other.

You won’t hear something really new or surprising on this album, but Kutna Hora proves to be capable of making fine emotional songs, with enough variety. “Will or Nothing” is certainly a pleasant album to listen to, and the fact that is was created in Argentina gives it perhaps some extra flavour. Recommended if you like tranquil folky guitar songs with a lot of feeling.
